Winter Weather Update

Through A.D. 2011 December 25:

First light frost: 2011 October
First hard frost: 2011 October
First snowfall: 2011 October 27
First "sticking" snow: 2011 October 27
Total snowfall: 006 centimeters
Days with complete snow cover: 00

It was another brown Christmas here in Central New York.  That makes seven out of eight.  This year, there was absolutely no snow.  In fact, we only had about two inches of snow from the first snowfall through Christmas, and one inch of that came during the first snowfall back in October.  There were five or six dustings, but that was it.  In addition to the lack of snow, it has been warm: most days the high temperatures have been in the 40s or 50s.

Through A.D. 2011 December 31

Total snowfall: 007 centimeters
Days with complete snow cover: 00

Through A.D. 2012 January 05:

Total snowfall: 008 centimeters
Days with complete snow cover: 03

We got about a centimeter of snow on the second (I can't remember if it was during the day or during the night of the 2nd/3rd).  It's still here, though it will likely be gone by the end of the day tomorrow.

By the way, no "snow cover" statistical category this year because work makes it nearly impossible.  Also, I'm not sure which day was our first with a high temperature at or below 0 degrees Celsius.

26 December 2010

Weather Update

Through A.D. 2010 December 25:

Days with snow cover:  027

Days with complete snow cover:  016
Total snowfall: 013 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 03 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 02.5 centimeters
Maximum low temperature: 07
º Fahrenheit (about -14º Celsius)

Well, we had the closest thing we've had in seven Christmases to a white Christmas.  It was cold, and the day commenced with somewhat less than 1 cm of snow on the ground.  However, we got about a centimeter (and a half?) during the day, giving it a nice wintry feeling.  Good stuff.

26 December 2009

Weather Update

Through A.D. 2009 December 26:

Days with snow cover: 25
Days with complete snow cover: 14
Total snowfall: 024 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 08 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 08 centimeters
Maximum low temperature: 04º Fahrenheit (-15.5º Celsius)

Well, another Christmas has come and gone. As in years past, this year's Christmas weather was less than ideal. Ironically, Christmas day was the warmest (and the only one with a high temperature above freezing) in the past sixteen days! We started with close-to-complete snow cover. The regular brown patches expanded over the course of the day. It began pouring down rain about 16:00, and the snow cover was almost completely gone by 20:00. As I type this on A.D. 2009 December 26, I can't even see any snow out the window. There's still a little bit out there, but the patches are few and far between. Christmas in Dundee...

Was it a white Christmas? I don't know. For the most part, we had complete snow cover this morning. However, that was gone by the end of the day. The weather was the exact opposite of what you'd want on Christmas: the warmest day in more than two weeks and rainy. I guess I'm going to say "yes" to it being a white Christmas but "hell no" to it feeling like a white Christmas.

29 December 2008

Weather Update

Through A.D. 2008 December 29:

Days with snow cover: 048
Days with complete snow cover: 24
Total snowfall: 066 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 25 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 20 centimeters
Lowest temperature: -15º Celsius (05º Fahrenheit)

Two-thousand eight marked our first white Christmas since 2003. Unfortunately, it was pretty anti-climatic after the overwhelming majority of snow melted on Christmas Eve. At daybreak on December 24, snow coverered the ground to a uniform depth of 10 inches. At daybreak on December 25, snow covered the ground (in most places) to a depth of no more than three inches. In fact, we had less than 90% snow cover and the average snow depth did not exceed 1 inch. Still, I guess it did count as our first "white Christmas" since I moved up here. By the end of the day December 27, only a handful of patches of snow were visible from my house.

Temperatures on December 27 and 28 were in the upper 50s Fahrenheit.

Days with snow cover: 43
Days with complete snow cover: 23
Total snowfall: 59 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 20 centimeters
Maximum low temperature: -12º Celsius

The winter of A.D. 2007/2008 came in like a lion, but the last 10 days have been more like a lamb. Since A.D. 2007 December 22 we've had 0 days with high temperatures at or below 0 degrees C. The first 22 days of December saw 21 days with high temperatures at or below that mark. The next three days promise to be the coldest days of the season to date, but we are forecast to have at least a week with temperatures from 5 to 10 degrees C. above normal after that. More and more this year is shaping up to be like A.D. 2005/2006. I just hope that cold temperatures return before February 06!

The complete statistics for this winter through A.D. 2007 December 31 are as follows:

First light frost: A.D. 2007 September 17
First hard frost: A.D. 2007 October 29
First snow: A.D. 2007 October 28

Days with snow cover: 42
Days with complete snow cover: 22
Total snowfall: 57 centimeters

Snow on Christmas? No
