Days with snow cover: 048
Days with complete snow cover: 24
Total snowfall: 066 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 25 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 20 centimeters
Lowest temperature: -15º Celsius (05º Fahrenheit)

Two-thousand eight marked our first white Christmas since 2003. Unfortunately, it was pretty anti-climatic after the overwhelming majority of snow melted on Christmas Eve. At daybreak on December 24, snow coverered the ground to a uniform depth of 10 inches. At daybreak on December 25, snow covered the ground (in most places) to a depth of no more than three inches. In fact, we had less than 90% snow cover and the average snow depth did not exceed 1 inch. Still, I guess it did count as our first "white Christmas" since I moved up here. By the end of the day December 27, only a handful of patches of snow were visible from my house.

Temperatures on December 27 and 28 were in the upper 50s Fahrenheit.

20 December 2008

Weather Update

Through A.D. 2008 December 20:

Days with snow cover: 039
Days with complete snow cover: 16
Total snowfall: 062 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 22 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 20 centimeters
Lowest temperature: about -13º Celsius (08º Fahrenheit)

We had our greatest snowfall of the season yesterday: 20 centimeters. That beats last winter's greatest snowfall by a third, but that's not saying much. In the middle of the storm we had an hour of freezing rain. That makes five times this winter. More snow is expected over the next two days - we could have more than a foot of snow on the ground by Tuesday.

19 December 2008

Weather Update

Through A.D. 2008 December 18:

Days with snow cover: 037
Days with complete snow cover: 14
Total snowfall: 042 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 15 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 15 centimeters
Lowest temperature: about -13º Celsius (08º Fahrenheit)

Haha! A white Christmas appears inevitable! We're in the middle of a pretty significant storm for our area. The weathermen forecast 6-10 inches, and we've already had about three. At the rate that it's falling, we may end up with a foot. It will be my second white Christmas out of 27, my first out of five in New York, and my second out of six north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Earlier in the week we had another significant icing - so much that it has been dangerous to walk around since Wednesday. We're up to four this year.

14 December 2008

Weather Update

Through A.D. 2008 December 14:

Days with snow cover: 033
Days with complete snow cover: 12
Total snowfall: 039 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 15 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 15 centimeters
Lowest temperature: about -13º Celsius (08º Fahrenheit)

Finally back to that Christmas-like weather! Fifteen cm of snow last Thursday/Friday - tied for our largest snowfall from last year. I'm hoping that it'll lead to even bigger totals! The storm started as freezing rain - that makes three instances this season, and all have been "significant."

Weather Update

Days with snow cover: 029
Days with complete snow cover: 09
Total snowfall: 024 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 08 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 07 centimeters
Lowest temperature: about -13º Celsius (08º Fahrenheit)

Snow 22 out of the past 25 days, but you have to hunt to find any left on the ground. Tuesday (December 09) brought our second freezing rain event of the season - another with a fair amount of ice. Today (December 10) started around 10ºC but quickly dropped to -5ºC. Even though we didn't get any freezing rain, the rain we got this morning was solid ice by this afternoon...

08 December 2008

Through A.D. 2008 December 08:

Days with snow cover: 027
Days with complete snow cover: 09
Total snowfall: 023 centimeters
Maximum snow depth: 08 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 07 centimeters
Lowest temperature: about -13º Celsius (08º Fahrenheit)

Snow has fallen 20 of the past 23 days. That total will probably become 21 of 24 after tomorrow, though the storm that will start as snow is forecast to turn to ice and, eventually, rain.

Incredibly, during the past 20 days, we have only received 22 centimeters (about 9 inches) of snow. Almost all of that came during a week-long stretch in mid-to-late November. Though it has snowed 11 of the last 13 days, we've only had 4 centimeters (less than 2 inches) during that time. (and I was VERY generous with the totals) There has not been complete snow cover since November 29, and it appears that the next 10 days will be the warmest in a month. Are we heading toward our fifth consecutive brown Christmas?

02 December 2008

Days with complete snow cover: 09

Greatest snow event: 07 centimeters

Lowest temperature: about -12º Celsius (11º Fahrenheit)

We had a full centimeter of ice on 2008 November 30 after about 12 hours of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. It was our first ice storm of the season.

30 November 2008

Weather Update

Through A.D. 2008 November 30:

Days with snow cover: 019
Days with complete snow cover: 09

Maximum snow depth: 08 centimeters
Greatest snow event: 07 centimeters
Lowest temperature: about -12º Celsius (11º Fahrenheit)
First day with a high temperature below 0º Celsius: A.D. 2008 November 18

It snowed every one of the last 15 days in November, though nothing much stuck the last five days. Still, it's pretty cool that we had fifteen consecutive days with snow this early in the season! Not to mention the fact that we've already had 20 centimeters of snow, 19 days with snow cover, and 09 days on which the ground was completely covered! This has definitely been the coldest/snowiest November that I've experienced in New York.

Days with complete snow cover: 01
Total snowfall: 006 centimeters

We awoke to three centimeters of snow this morning - by far our largest snowfall of the season. Though half of the snow had melted by noon, it began snowing at 15:00 and we had another centimeter by 16:00. As 20 of the 24 hours of this day had snow covering the ground, and as the day started and ended with snow covering the ground, 2008 November 17 will go down as the first day of the winter of 2008/2009 with complete snow cover.

10 November 2008

Weather Update

A.D. 2008 November 10 might have been the first day in the winter of A.D. 2008/2009 that the maximum temperature did not exceed 0 degrees Celsius. I say "might" because I didn't get home until about 15:30, and it was 0 degrees and cooling at that point. I'm not going to save the date because it was just too close to call...

In any case, we awoke to our second snow accumulation of the season this morning. It wasn't much - somewhere around half of a centimeter - but it sure was pretty. Almost all of the snow is gone now, but the ground is still covered just three miles south of us. We ran some errands down there this evening, and some locations had as much as two inches. As it was very wet snow, it stuck to everything, turning the world into a winter wonderland... You have to love this time of year!

P.S. Through 2008 October 29, it has already snowed on four separate days. That's the most snowfalls we have had in October since I moved to New York in 2004.

25 October 2008

First Snow

We received our first snow of the season on A.D. 2008 October 21. Though nothing accumulated, it snowed off and on for two days.

First light frost of autumn: 2005 October 20
First hard frost of autumn: 2005 October 28

29 September 2008

Beautiful Autumn

This has been a beautiful September. Most days have been in the 60s or low 70s, and we've had just the right amount of rain. We had our first light frost on 2008 September 19 and our second light frost on 2008 September 22. That's quite different from last year, when our first and second light frosts were a month apart. It looks like we have some more near-freezing weather in store the end of this week.

21 September 2008

First Frost

Our first light frost of the winter of A.D. 2008/2009 occurred on the morning of September 19. Though the low temperature was 35 degrees Fahrenheit, there was ice on both of our vehicles and on the grass clippings that had piled up in the backyard.

Well, I think we can put winter to bed.

We had one last frost on 2008 May 20 - a little late by our standards. While it didn't coat the ground white, it certainly would've killed any tomatoes that had been planted. Nonetheless, I didn't classify it as a "hard" frost - just a "light" one.

Now the question is how long will our growing season be? If I say that it began on May 06, I'm going to guess that it will be...161 days. That means that my guess for the first "hard" frost of autumn will be 2008 October 16.

We received about 1 cm of snow on the morning of April 13. It lasted for an hour or two before melting, and it was beautiful.

I believe that we had a hard frost on May 01, but my statistics are elsewhere at the moment, so I'll have to double check that date.

We might get a light frost tonight, depending on what the cloud cover is like...

We actually had snow cover for about 135 or 136 days, but the last three or four the snow was confined to a single spot on our farm, and I didn't feel like it should count.

As soon as I started to think about our last frost, we stopped having them. It's been about two weeks since our last "killing" frost, and we've only had one light frost in that same time period. However, a cold front came through today and it looks like we're going to have a hard frost, and maybe some snow tonight.

As of today, we're only four weeks away from the start of the historical growing season.

Spring is coming. All of the Croci are now in bloom. The Crocus vernus 'Jeanne d'Arc' started blooming on April 01 and the Crocus sieberi sublimus 'Tricolor' began blooming today (April 02).

Rain turned to snow overnight and I had a little bit on my windshield this morning. There is a little bit of snow left in the highest, shadiest spot on our farm, but it won't last more than a couple of days. If we have three more days with any snow cover we will have exceded last year's total by a third.

15 cm of snow last night - tied for our largest snowfall of the winter! It's beautiful out this morning and great to see snow covering the ground again!

The snow turned to freezing rain before I left for work this morning - 11 times we've had freezing rain this year (7 times it resulted in significant icings).

The snow brings us to within 4 centimeters of last year's total - it is amazing how close the tallies are! Ironically, we've had almost an identical amount of snow and a lot more days with partial snow cover. Even more ironcially, we've had fewer days with complete snow cover.

It's snowing very hard at the moment. We've already had one centimeter of accumulation, and we'll get a lot more if it keeps snowing like this. Anything more this evening will have to be added later.

The Crocus ancyrensis 'Golden Bunch' were about to start blooming on 2008 March 17, but two things happened: the [damned] chickens pecked the petals off of a few of them, and the weather turned nasty. The past few days have seen near constant precipitation: +1 degree C. with rain; 0+ degrees C. with rain; and now -2 degrees C. with snow. Nonetheless, the Croci should bloom the next sunny day above freezing.

I thought that we were going to lose our complete snow cover today, but it's still here! It's thin in places, so we'll probably start seeing bare spots tomorrow.

As the snow melted today, it got shallow enough to see three snowdrops poking up through the white. They haven't opened yet, but they're fully budded out and waiting for a warm, sunny day!

Ice storm number ten arrived on Saturday morning. Incredibly, it was even worse than the storm from last Tuesday. In the span of five days, we had two separate ice storms that were the 2nd and 3rd worst that my wife and I can remember. It has been an absolutely incredible winter, and I doubt that I will ever experience one with as much ice.

So far this year we've had ten incidents of freezing rain, seven of which were significant.

This morning, the temperature dropped to -3 degrees Fahrenheit (-19.5 degrees C.). It was the coldest temperature of the season, and one degree F. colder than the coldest temperature last winter. It's still well above the historical average low temperature (-10 degrees F.), but I'm very happy that it actually got "below 0" at least once this year. The nose hairs in one of my nostrils actually froze!

We had our seventh freezing rain event of the season Monday night into Tuesday. After receiving 7 cm of snow (our biggest snowfall since mid December), the weather changed and we had 11 hours of freezing rain. It was our fifth "significant" freezing rain event of the season. People in our area continue to be amazed at the bizarre weather.

The last few weeks have been odd. There were about 10 days in the middle of January that were nice and cold, but we only had two centimeters of snow during that period. Even then, most of that snow melted soon after it fell. The final week of January was characterized by high temperatures between 1 and 5 degrees Celsius. We had a significant ice storm on Friday, February 01. That storm marked our third significant ice storm of the season and our fifth overall. Considering that we only had freezing rain twice in the previous three winters, five in the first half of one winter is exceptional. Even more incredible is the possibility that we'll have a sixth instance tonight!

The insanely horrible first half of the winter of A.D. 2006-2007 was about as crappy as a winter could be. However, the second half of the winter was about as good as a winter could be. So far this winter, out of a possible 9 weeks of winter weather, we've had three weeks with significant snow cover and cold, two weeks with very little snow cover and cold, and four weeks with neither snow cover nor cold. If you factor in the upcoming week, which is supposed to be between 5 and 10 degrees C., we're looking at a winter where 50% of the time has been "like winter" and 50% of it has been like "damned Virginia winter" as I call it. Even though the forecast says that it is going to remain in that 5 degrees C. range, I sure hope that the weathermen are wrong and that we can get enough snow and cold in February to play some more hockey and do some more snowshoeing. Every year Canadian winters look more attractive to me...

It appears that our unseasonably warm weather pattern is finally coming to an end. From December 22 through January 15, we had only three days at or below 0 degrees Celsius. That's almost three and a half weeks of unseasonably warm weather in the middle of winter. I hope it's that last of that kind of weather until spring comes. I keep waiting for the ponds to refreeze and for enough snow to go snowshoeing!

The three previous days have all been below 0º Celsius, but the next eleven (including today) are supposed to be well above normal (high temperatures around 5-10º Celsius). If the forecast holds true, we will have had 23 days since the last cold period, and three days will have had high temperatures below 0º. More and more this winter is mimicking the winter of A.D. 2005/2006. It is truly amazing how similar they have been so far.

The winter of A.D. 2007/2008 came in like a lion, but the last 10 days have been more like a lamb. Since A.D. 2007 December 22 we've had 0 days with high temperatures at or below 0 degrees C. The first 22 days of December saw 21 days with high temperatures at or below that mark. The next three days promise to be the coldest days of the season to date, but we are forecast to have at least a week with temperatures from 5 to 10 degrees C. above normal after that. More and more this year is shaping up to be like A.D. 2005/2006. I just hope that cold temperatures return before February 06!

The complete statistics for this winter through A.D. 2007 December 31 are as follows:
